PAULAWNIA

”Kiri” (paulawnia) is traditionally considered the best wood for storage furniture, “tansu” chest of drawers, in Japan as it is good for preventing humidity, and fire, but very durable. “Kiri” tansu has been preserving the prescious kimono and goods of Japanese households. In the Edo period, it was customary to plant a Kiri tree when a girl was born; the tree would be cut and used for her trousseau chest when she grewup and married. It was the advantages of being relatively fire resistant, as woods go, and very stable in a variety of temperatures and humidity levels.  Kiri was favored for clothing and sword chests for its ability to reduce rust and mildew in the humid Japanese summers. Over time and with use, its surface often displays a beautiful patina, which upgrades its ambiance.

(1) Moisture Proof, permeability
Sensitive to atmosphere, the fibers expands becoming tight when it absorbs moisture so that any gap in the drawer is filled, resulting in prevention of humidity from the outside.  When the atmosphere is dry, they shrink and make gaps that exhausts the humidity and introduces dry air inside. By this, the humidity within the Tansu could be kept constant.
(2) Non-flammable
Because of its low heat conductivity, the Kiri is non-flammable. Once water is absorbed ,water, the heat resistance become stronger and protects clothing inside even if the outside of the Kiri Tansu is burned black.

(3) Light weight

Light, smooth, and less stretching and distortion compared with other lumber.

(4) Warm and soft

The bark is warm and glossy, its beautiful, graceful, through and through sectio and quarter section in white ground gives one makes one feel comfortable.

(5) Refreshable

After long use, you can use further, almost permanently, by refreshing.
